Did You Know Electric Tankless Water Heaters Are Great For Radiant/Floor Heating?

Radiant in-floor heating provides a comfortable way to distribute heat evenly throughout a home. With radiant surfaces everywhere, you can maintain a lower air temperature than usual and still feel warm.

A well-designed hydronic heating system can be very energy-efficient, especially when using a high-efficiency tankless water heater as the main hot water source. For even greater savings, you can install a solar thermal system to let the sun handle some of the water heating.

A system with a tankless water heater is more responsive and provides an unlimited supply of clean hot water, free from sediments and mineral build-ups, running through the floor heating pipes.

Tankless water heaters are ideal for this application because they heat water only when needed. Water is fed through a super-efficient heat exchanger and heated to the desired temperature by adjusting the gas burner's flame. Temperature sensors monitor the water temperature, allowing the heater's computer to modulate the burner. This ensures that the water is never overheated or underheated.

Regardless of the heat dissipation rate of the pipes, the tankless water heater heats the water to the set temperature instantly, thanks to its ability to vary its heating flame and power. This results in a very responsive system that can quickly replenish lost heat in the pipes, quickly heating the floor when used in floor heating applications.

This heating system uses the entire finished floor as a giant radiator. Hot water is pumped through plastic tubing installed beneath the finished floor surface. A hydronic radiant floor can be installed beneath tile or wood and can also be embedded in a poured concrete slab. However, it's not suitable beneath wall-to-wall carpet, as carpet doesn’t conduct heat well.

Traditional tank boilers cannot vary their flame intensity and thus cannot achieve the same efficiency. A properly designed and installed system provides comfortable and efficient floor heating regulated by a standard thermostat inside the home. Besides offering a fast heating response, a hydronic system enables significant long-term energy savings, greatly reducing the operating cost of floor heating.
