Hi, I need help with my 45 HI NG. We just hooked it up and it keeps giving us an error code of E1. I looked in the manual, but I don’t quite understand. I’m not a super handy person with this sort of thing. Can you please help me?

Hi there Sarah,

We are sorry that you are having issues with your new setup. We are happy to help!

For your records, your ticket number is located above. We regret any inconvenience that this issue may be causing you and please be assured that we will do what is necessary to resolve it. Please don't hesitate to contact us anytime or to update this ticket as needed.

The E1 error code is directly related to an issue involving your gas supply.

  1. If you are getting an E1 error code, first verify that your water heater is the correct gas type. On the right side of the water heater, there is a plate that specifies LP for Liquid Propane or NG for Natural Gas. This should match the type of gas that is being supplied.

  2. If this matches, verify that your installer checked to make sure that the gas is the correct pressure for your 45H/HI. The pressure needed for this model is 8-11 inches of water column for Liquid Propane and 4-6 inches of water column for Natural Gas.

  3. Also, make sure your installer used a regulator capable of delivering the proper gas flow needed for the 140,000BTU 45H/HI.

  4. Next, verify that your gas supply is turned on.

  5. Lastly, after doing all of this, make sure that you are not out of gas.

    Other things to consider:

Can you hear the water heater trying to ignite?

In a proper ignition sequence, the fan will come on, the display will show ground water temperature, and you will hear a series of fast, high pitched clicking followed by a few lower pitched clicks which are noticeably slower. It should go through this sequence twice if it does not ignite.

Please let us know if this works.

Thanks,

Hello again! I’ve checked all the steps you listed above, but I’m still getting the E1 code. We already got rid of our traditional water heater and were really wanting to have this set up and ready to go by this evening. Thank you for all of your help!

No worries! We will do everything we can to get you some hot water running smoothly as quick as possible. Can you please answer the following questions for me? This will help us narrow down what it could be. Thank you in advance!

  1. Are both burners firing?

  2. Does the E1 exhibit after 2 burners fire up or just one?

  3. Have you tried cleaning the screen filter?

Everything relates to gas when getting an E1 code.

E1 could also be the Flow meter sensor and/or screen filter.

E1 appears especially when the gas pressure is not enough to feed the unit.

Hope this helps you!

Thanks,

That worked! I decided to take your advice and clean the screen filter. After I put it back on, the unit fired up with no problem and is running great!

Thank you so much. If I happen to need you again, what do I do?
