How to Replace the Over Temperature Sensor on a Portable Water Heater

How to replace the over temperature sensor on your portable water heater (L5, L7, L10, EL5, EL7, EL10)

Steps to Change the Over the Temperature Sensor

Follow the steps below to replace the Over Temperature Sensor on your portable water heater models L5, L7, L10, EL5, EL7, and EL10.

  1. Remember to remove the knobs first.

  2. Unscrew the screws located at the top and bottom of the water heater.

  3. Gently remove the cover by sliding the cover up towards the top and mind the wires and the on/off switch.

  4. Locate the Over Temperature Sensor, held on by 2 screws and 2 prongs.

  5. Unscrew the 2 screws holding the sensor on and set those screws aside in a safe place.

  6. Using needle nose pliers, remove the 2 connectors from the prongs.

  7. Unscrew the 2 screws holding the sensor on and set those screws aside in a safe place.

  8. Replace the old sensor with the new sensor, metal side down on the plate.

  9. Using the 2 screws you set aside, screw the sensor in place and reconnect the 2 prongs.

  10. Put the cover of the water heater back on using a screwdriver and the screws you set aside earlier.

Where an Over Temperature Sensor is Located

Model EL7

For the portable model EL7, the over-temperature sensor will be vertical and located on the upper right-hand side of the heater.

Models L10 and EL10

For the portable models L10 and EL10, the over-temperature sensor will be vertical and located on the upper left-hand side of the heater.

Models L5 and EL5

For the portable models L5 and EL5, the over-temperature sensor will be horizontal and located on the outlet water valve of the heat exchanger.
